Beware of AT&T! "AT&T CHARGES FOR SERVICES NEVER REQUESTED!!!" MARCH, 1998: "Last week I received in the mail a letter from AT&T congratulating me on my new PERSONAL 800 NUMBER, and telling me about the charges which will automatically be added to my monthly phone bill. I never asked for this service, but there was no telephone number listed on the letter to call for more information. It took more than two hours of my time to locate the AT&T office in charge of this 800# service. They told me that when I requested the AT&T Internet disks to be sent to me last month, I was automatically signed up for this service. It took a supervisor to remove the service, who hung up on me when I asked how it was legal for them to do such a thing." APRIL, 1998: "Last month I asked AT&T to remove the Personal 800 Service from my telephone bill, which they had erroneously signed me up for. This month's bill came with a $2.00 charge for the removal of the service. AT&T REFUSED to remove this charge from my telephone bill...so I told them to remove themselves from my bill. Now I started using a long distance service called VARTEC Telecom (800-544-1510), which charges me 5 cents a minute for calls within California, and 10 cents a minute for calls outside the state, 24 hours a day, plus a $5.00 service charge. I figure I'm saving approximately $40.00 a month. No problems with them yet." Please E-mail us your AT&T
