"AT&T ACCUSED OF FALSE ADVERTISING"

DECEMBER, 1997: "I have an AT&T Universal Card. It's a Master Card and a calling card in one. I have had it for maybe five years already. The original offer said that there is never an annual fee for the card. But guess what? Yup, there sure is. $40.00 worth. This year, when I realized I was being charged, I called and complained. AT&T said that the annual charge will be remoevd this year, but if I'm going to keep the card I have to remind them every year of this. That means I have to look at every month's bill and make sure that they don't bill me for $40.00. I don't know about you, but I really don't have time to check every moth's bill (although I should). Why can't they just put this information in their computers? Well, I decided to keep the card, but for emergencies only. It's not in my wallet any longer."

Rec'd 9/3/1999: In an effort to reduce the interest I pay on a large amount of credit card debt I carry, I transfered the balance I had on 3 different card to a new AT&T Universal card. I had done several transfer balances to other cards in the past, so I did not read the fine print. Imagine my shock when my first statement showed three $25 charges for the transfers. When I called to complain, one $25 charge was reversed. So as soon as I could I transferred the balance on the AT&T Universal card to my Yahoo! First USA Bank VISA card. Before writing the transfer check I called AT&T Universal card to verify that my balance was indeed the amount on my latest statement. I was told that it was the same and sent in that amount along with my cut-up cards and instructions to cancel my account. The next month I received a statement that I still owed $4.85. When I called customer service I was informed that this was "trailing interest." Now this is not much money, but it really ticks me off! I have never heard of trailing interest and do not feel that I owe this money, but feel I must pay it so my credit does not get screwed. I think I have been screwed by AT&T's excessive charges. Susan C. [Webmaster's note: The interest charges may very well be legal, but AT&T should have added this to the final balance the customer asked for.]
