Biggest SCAM of this century
(or pretty close...)

An insider's story!

The following was sent to me in December, 1998, by a VONS employee, regarding "Vons Club". Please read it, it's scary.

"I worked at a Vons in Southern California for over a year.  As you suggested, there are scams and customers paying more than they expect.  The advertised prices for Vons Club savings are added up and calculated at the registers.  Some customers review their receipt before exiting the store, and about 1 in 5 who do this find an error.  There is sometimes a 5 or 10 cent difference on some items, and when these figures add up, Vons is getting thousands of extra dollars. Vons does have a careful secret: if a customer does notice a difference, the customer must get that item for free and be refunded for that item.  This is probably for customers keeping quiet and thinking it is an ocassional error, which it is not.

"Inside every vons there are two computers.  On one, if any employee types in your driver's license or Social Security number, they can find out your address, phone number, and your Vons card number.

"The other computer is restricted for supervisors' use only.  It accesses every item you ever bought a Vons, how much you paid, method of payment, use of coupons, checking account number, and a list of any other Vons store you shopped.  This information can only be recordered when you swipe your Vons Club card.  I am in disgust knowing all this information can be accessed, especially since it is all legal.

"My advice is that, when you apply for a Vons Club card, enter a false driver's license number, and it is not necessary to give your Social Security number.  Put in a false name, but if you want to receive your Club bonuses, enter a real mailing address." SoCal, 12/1998.
